1. Know exactly what the metal is

Ask for the metal on every product, in writing.

  • 925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and should be stamped 925. It gives real weight and can be re-plated.
  • Solid gold (10K, 14K) is the premium tier and is priced by weight.
  • Brass, alloy or stainless steel with plating is fashion jewelry. Fine to sell, as long as it’s sold as what it is.

Ask what plating is used (rhodium, yellow gold, rose gold) and how the supplier finishes the back of the piece.

2. Know exactly what the stones are

“Ice” can mean diamond, lab-grown diamond, moissanite or CZ, and the price difference between them is huge. Your supplier should name the stone on every item. Moissanite often comes with a GRA-style card. It’s useful as a product spec, but it isn’t the same as an independent diamond lab report, so don’t present it as one.

3. Order samples before bulk

Photos hide a lot. Before a large order, get a few samples and check:

  1. The metal stamp.
  2. Stones sitting level, held by metal rather than glue.
  3. Weight and thickness against the listing.
  4. The back, edges and bail finish.
  5. How the plating looks under shop lighting.

4. Ask about minimums and mixing designs

Every supplier sets a minimum order. Ask whether you can mix designs and sizes within it, and whether the minimum is per design or per order. Mixed orders let a new store test which pieces sell before committing.

5. Custom and private label

6. Shipping, tracking and import costs

Ask how orders ship, whether every parcel is tracked, and how long delivery to your city usually takes. Jewelry imported into the US goes through customs and may carry duty depending on what it’s made of, so check the likely cost with a customs broker or carrier before you set retail prices.

7. Plan your pricing

Work out your full landed cost: the wholesale price plus shipping, duty and packaging. Price from that number, not from the invoice. Many jewelry retailers start around double their cost (“keystone”) and adjust for the piece and the market.
